Having begun their creative endeavors as a dark and abrasive post-punk outfit (and an exceptional one at that), Head Over Heels serves as a bridge between the funereal gothic noise of the latter period and the more refined dream pop that would cement Cocteau Twins' legacy as shoegazing trailblazers. The departure of bassist Will Heggie, who formed fellow Scottish band Lowlife, saw Robin Guthrie assume full responsibility for songwriting and production, which gave him full reign to unleash his sonic vision. Traces of future experimentation, as on the jazz infused rhythms of 'Multifoiled', and the bands previous post-punk rush, like the exhilarating album highlight 'In Our Angelhood', can be distinguished alongside the most impressive vocal performance from Liz Fraser to date. An essential 4AD release.
